Same family, different jobs
Repointing is the fix. Worn mortar comes out of the joints. New mortar goes in. It seals the wall and holds brick in place. Most brick walls need it every few decades.
Tuckpointing is the finish. Joints get filled with tinted mortar. Then a thin light line is laid down the center of each joint. The lines look sharp and clean. It makes a plain wall look like fine brickwork.
Which one are you asking for?
Most folks who call for tuckpointing need repointing. Their joints are worn and leak. True tuckpointing is for looks. It suits front walls where style counts.
A good mason tells you which fits. We do that at each free visit.
Do it in the right order
Tuckpointing goes on top of good repointing. Worn joints must be fixed first. No pretty line can save bad joints. Ask for a price that splits the two steps. Then you see what each part costs.
