What repointing does
Repointing renews the joints in a brick wall. Old mortar wears down over the years. Rain, frost, and sun break it apart. We grind the worn mortar out to a good depth. Then we pack new mortar in its place. The wall is sealed tight again.
This is the core fix for aging brick. Joints are the weak link in each wall. Brick can last a century. Mortar lasts a few decades. Repointing on time keeps the whole wall sound. Skip it and brick starts to shift.
Most Baltimore walls need this at some point. Rowhomes, colonials, old mills. If your home is past 30 years with no joint work, it is time for a look.
Signs your walls need it
Walk your home once a year. Look for these signs.
- Mortar falls out when you scratch it with a key.
- You see gaps or cracks along the joints.
- White crust forms on the brick face.
- Brick feels loose or shifts a bit.
- Water stains show on walls inside.
One bad spot can be patched. Wear all over means full repointing. We test each wall and tell you which it is.
Our process
Step 1: Free visit and test. We check each wall up close. We test mortar hardness with hand tools. We note which walls are worn.
Step 2: Written price. You get a clear price before work starts. It lists each wall and the scope. No vague lines.
Step 3: Site guard. We mask glass and doors. We cover plants. Dust sheets go down where needed.
Step 4: Grind out old joints. Worn mortar comes out to about an inch deep. We use grinders and hand tools. Brick faces are spared.
Step 5: Pack new mortar. Fresh mix is pressed in layer by layer. Each joint is shaped to shed rain. The mix suits your brick age.
Step 6: Wash and walk-through. We wash haze off the brick. Then we walk the job with you. New joints look dark first, then fade to blend.
Why the mix must suit the brick
Old Baltimore brick is soft. It was set with soft lime mortar. Soft joints flex as walls move. Hard new mortar does not flex. It traps damp and pops brick faces off. This is the most common joint mistake we see.
We test your old mortar at the visit. Then we mix to match its softness. Lime-based where the wall calls for it. The new joints move with the wall. That is why they last.
What shapes the price
Wall area leads. More joints means more hours. Depth of wear counts. Deep grinding takes longer. Access shapes cost too. High walls need lifts. Bad prior work adds time when it must be fixed first.

Small jobs stop big harm
Joint wear starts small. A bit of powder here, a small gap there. Left alone, water gets in. Frost pries joints wider each winter. Brick loosens. Then a small fix turns into wall work.
Early repointing is the best deal in masonry. A day of joint work now can save weeks of wall work later. Walk your walls each spring. Call when you see wear.
Why Baltimore mortar fails
Baltimore weather is hard on mortar. Winters swing above and below freezing, sometimes in the same week. Water sits in the joints, freezes, and pries them wider. Each spring the gaps are a bit bigger. Summers bring driving rain off the Bay. Walls that face south and west take the worst of it, year after year.
Age is the other force. Much of the city's brick went up before 1940. Its mortar has given decades of service. Even good lime mortar tires out after many decades. If your home has never had joint work, the mortar is living on borrowed time. A scratch test tells the story in seconds.
Salt speeds the wear. Stoops and low walls catch road salt each winter. Salt creeps into joints and breaks them from inside. Parapets suffer too. They catch weather from both sides and the top, with no roof to shelter them. Their joints often fail first on a building, long before the walls below show wear.
The fix is repointing on time. Fresh joints seal the wall again. Water stays out. Frost has nothing to pry. Brick that could have shifted stays put. A wall repointed at the right moment can serve for decades more. Wait too long and the job grows from joints to brick.
Soft walls need soft mortar
Here is the mistake we see most. Old Baltimore brick is soft. It was fired at low heat and set with soft lime mortar. The wall moves a little with heat and cold. Soft joints flex with it. That give is what kept these walls standing for a century.
New hard mortar does not flex. It is stronger than the brick around it. When the wall moves, the hard joint wins and the brick loses. Faces pop off. Brick spalls. The wall looks worse than before the fix. We repair walls ruined by hard mortar every year.
We test your old mortar at the free visit. A scratch test tells us how hard it is. Then we mix to suit. Lime-based mixes where the wall calls for it. Softer sand where the old joints ask for it. The new joints give a little, the way the old ones did. That is why they last instead of fighting the wall.
Ask any mason you are comparing about mortar hardness. If they plan one mix for every wall, young or old, keep looking. Your brick deserves a mix made for its age. That single choice decides whether the work lasts decades or fails in years.
