What stone repointing does

Stone joints are not like brick joints. They run wide and crooked. Each stone sits its own way. Repointing stone means working joint by joint with hand tools. Mortar is packed deep. Each joint is shaped to shed water off faces that were never flat.

Baltimore holds lots of stone. Base walls under old rowhomes. Garden and yard walls. Porch posts. Now and then a full stone face. Much of it was set with lime mortar a century back.

This is slow craft. No crew can rush it. The mason reads each joint and packs it right. That care is why it lasts.

Signs your stone needs it

Stone shows wear its own way.

Leaning walls need a look soon. Loose stone only gets looser.

How it works

Step 1: We read the wall. Stone type, joint width, and mortar hardness are noted. We check for shifts or lean.

Step 2: We clear bad mortar. Loose mix is raked out by hand. Stones are left firm in place.

Step 3: We mix lime mortar. The mix stays soft to suit old stone. Hard mixes crack against stone that moves.

Step 4: We pack each joint. Mortar is pressed deep by hand. Faces are shaped to throw water clear.

Step 5: We brush and check. Joints are brushed neat. We walk the wall and test firmness.

Lime and stone go hand in hand

Stone shifts a touch with heat and settling. Stiff new mortar cracks against it. Then chunks pop out in a few winters. We see this on walls other crews redid.

Lime mortar flexes with the stone. It is the mix old walls were built with. We match that softness. The joints then age with the wall, not against it.

What shapes the price

Joint width and wall length lead. Wide deep joints eat more mortar and hours. Stone harm counts. Resetting loose stone adds time. Access to base walls can be tight.

Base walls pay back fast

Old base walls guard the whole house. When their joints fail, water seeps in. Musty cellars and damp walls follow. Repointing the base is one of the best buys for an old home.

We work base walls from inside and out as needed. The job is dusty but quick. The payoff is a dry base for years.

Stone joints are a different craft

Stone walls play by different rules than brick. The stones are irregular, no two alike. Joints run wide in spots and thin in others. There is far more mortar in a stone wall than a brick one. The mason reads each joint as it comes, and the trowel follows the stone.

The work is slower and more hand-driven. Grinders fit brick joints neatly, but stone joints need hand tools in the tight spots and around odd shapes. Each joint is packed and shaped to suit the stones around it. Rushed stone work shows from across the street. Careful stone work lasts for generations.

The mix matters even more here. Old stone walls were laid with soft lime mortar. The stones move a little with the seasons, settling and shifting by hairs. Soft joints move with them. Hard modern mortar cracks the stone instead, and cracked stone cannot be patched like a joint can.

We match the old softness the way the wall was built to work. Lime mortar, mixed to the wall's own recipe as near as testing can tell us. The new joints flex, breathe, and shed water. The stones sit easy again. That is stone repointing done right.

Baltimore's stone walls

Stone turns up all over Baltimore. Old foundations sit on rubble stone, holding up whole blocks of rowhomes. Garden walls run along property lines. Churches and public buildings wear grand stone faces. Each type asks for its own care, and we give it.

Foundations do the heavy lifting. Their joints carry the house. When foundation joints soften, damp creeps into the basement and the wall loses its grip. Repointing them from inside, where we can reach, dries things out and firms the wall. It is unglamorous work that saves houses.

Garden walls live the hardest life. Soil piles against them and holds damp. Sprinklers soak them daily. Frost heaves them each winter. Their joints fail faster than any wall on the property. We rebuild the joints and shape them to shed water, and we tell you how to keep soil and sprinklers off them.

Stone faces on old buildings need the gentlest touch of all. Their mortar is often original lime, a century old and soft as chalk. We rake it out by hand, stone by stone, and pack fresh lime mortar in. The wall keeps its character and gains decades. Nothing about it looks new, which is exactly right.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does stone repointing cost more than brick?

It often takes more hours. Joints are wide and odd, and the work is by hand. We price the real wall at a free visit.

My base wall leaks. Will repointing stop it?

If bad joints are the way in, yes. We also check grade and spouts, since water source matters too.

Can you fix a leaning garden wall?

Some leans can be rebuilt straight. We look first and tell you if the wall can be saved or must come down.

What mortar do you use on old stone?

Lime-based mixes, soft like the old ones. Hard cement pops out of old stone in a few years.

How long will it last?

Good stone joints last decades. Lime weathers slow and can be touched up bit by bit.

Is stone repointing more work than brick?

Usually, yes. Irregular joints take more hand work and more mortar per foot. We price it by the wall after a free visit, in writing, so you see exactly what the work involves.

Can you match old stone mortar?

We match its softness, sand, and color. Old stone walls used lime mortar, and we mix lime mortar to suit. The match blends as it cures and moves the way the old joints did.

Do stone walls need waterproofing?

Rarely. Stone walls need to breathe. We fix the joints first, which solves most damp on its own. Sealers come last, only on walls where they truly earn it.
